Student Intern Program Information

The Student Intern position is an unpaid position. Under the supervision of a Student Advisor who is a Probation Officer, the Student Intern will complete or assist in various tasks as related to the job functions of Probation​​ Department line staff including Probation Aides, Assistant Probation Officers and Probation Officers. Areas of concentration are dependent mainly on the assignment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Part-time or Full-time enrollment in a college or university that is accredited by an agency recognized by the Probation Department's Background and Hiring Unit
  • Enrollment in the Internship program of the school of attendance
  • Sophomore level or higher student status
  • Current grade point average of at least 2.0
  • Ability to complete a variety of physical tasks such as standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, and lifting adults and/or juveniles, which requires strength, coordination, endurance, and agility
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing
  • Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a position if his or her application for citizenship is denied​​​

  • Be at least 18 years of age​​​​

Terms

  • No permanent appointments will be made from this class​​

  • Student interns shall submit to a limited background investigation, which includes but is not limited to fingerprinting and a criminal history check. A classifiable set of fingerprints shall be furnished to the Department of Justice and to the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Failure to complete or pass the background investigation automatically disqualifies an applicant from the program​​

  • Undergo and pass a tuberculosis screening

  • Participation as an unpaid Student Intern shall not exceed​ the end of the current semester from the initial date of appointment​​​

  • Student interns work part-time, no more than 24 hours per week, during the school term​​​

  • Applicants will be given the opportunity to indicate areas of preference for assignment during their internship; however, assignments will be based on department need and the student’s skills and availability​​​
