Julie Wherry has dedicated more than 27 years of distinguished service to the Sacramento County Probation Department, leading with integrity, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to community impact. Appointed Assistant Chief Probation Officer in 2018 and later serving as Interim Chief Probation Officer from December 2024 through June 2025, Chief Wherry has guided a department of more than 700 employees through periods of significant growth, reform, and modernization.
Beginning her career as a Probation Aide at the Youth Detention Facility, Chief Wherry advanced through roles in court, field and administrative operations, gaining extensive experience in program and policy development, and executive management. She played a pivotal role in establishing the Adult Day Reporting Centers, Pre-Trial Release and Monitoring Program, the County Jail Diversion Treatment and Resource Center, and Sacramento's Secure Youth Treatment Facility under juvenile realignment. Her leadership has consistently emphasized rehabilitation, accountability, and public safety through data-driven practices to enhance public safety.
Chief Wherry has strengthened training and leadership development, enhanced media and community communications, and fostered a culture of recognition, trust, and collaboration. She spearheaded the creation of the department's Training Division, implemented monthly recognitions and a department-wide challenge coin, and launched a public-facing newsletter highlighting employee achievements and positive community impacts—earning visibility and commendation from the Courts, County Executive Office, and Board of Supervisors.
Her oversight extends to behavioral-health and substance-use-disorder treatment, trauma-centered care, and cross-system collaboration at the County Jail Diversion Treatment Resource Center—one of Sacramento's flagship initiatives aimed at reducing recidivism and connecting individuals to treatment instead of incarceration.
Chief Wherry's leadership philosophy centers on collaboration, empowerment, efficiency, innovation, and continuous improvement. She serves on the Criminal Justice Cabinet, Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council Main and Subcommittees, where she bridges policy, practice, and education to strengthen California's justice system.
Raised in Sacramento, Chief Wherry is a proud graduate of California State University, Sacramento, and a wife and mother of three. She is an advocate for equal rights, second chances, and creating opportunities for clients and staff alike — believing that true public safety begins with hope, accountability, and human connection.
