2. Objectives:

a. 5.3.1 Identify the primary considerations for conducting facility searches

b. 5.3.2 Identify the procedure to follow when searching a facility

c. 5.3.3 Identify areas to search in a juvenile facility

d. 5.3.4 Identify items to look for when searching the facility

e. 5.3.5 Identify how to manage juveniles during facility searches

f. 5.3.6 In a simulated exercise, demonstrate the proper procedure for searching an area of a juvenile facility

3. Identify the primary considerations for conducting facility searches: Safety and security

4. Discuss the procedure to follow when searching a facility: Plan of action, equipment needed, location of residents, documentation

5. Identify areas to search in a juvenile facility: Rooms, day space, showers, class rooms, courtyard, etc.

6. List potential hiding places to be checked: Toilet, mattress, windows and doors, heating/AC/ventilation ducts

7. Identify items to look for when searching the facility: Weapons, excess supplies, damage to building/furniture, contraband, drugs, cell phones, etc.

8. Identify how to manage juveniles during facility searches: Designate a time to allow uninterrupted searches, remove juveniles from area being searched

9. Discuss limiting and controlling movement of juvenile workers during facility searches

10. Demonstrate the proper procedure for searching a room in a juvenile facility

11. Demonstrate the proper procedure for searching an entire housing unit of a juvenile facility
