Unit 5.0: Maintaining Security

1. Welcome and introductions
2. Objectives:
a. 5.2.1 Identify procedures for doing a numerical count
b. 5.2.2 Identify procedures for doing a body count
c. 5.2.3 Identify principles that are important to the effective counting of juveniles (e.g., welfare of juveniles, stop movement, never let juveniles count, etc.)
d. 5.2.4 Identify the procedure for responding to the absence of a juvenile
e. 5.2.5 Identify the general guidelines for searching for a missing or escaped juvenile
3. Discuss consistent and thorough application of counting practices
4. Identify procedures for doing a numerical count: Unit count versus total count
5. Discuss procedures for doing a body count: Staff must visually observe each resident present in the unit observing “skin, head and breathing”
6. Periodic counts, per Title 15
7. Room check logs
8. Unit count changes: New intake, release, rehousing
9. Discuss the procedure for responding to the absence of a juvenile
10. Identify the general guidelines for searching for a missing or escaped juvenile
