Mobile Probation Service Centers To Support Unhoused Clients

Granted 1.3 million to launch a Mobile Probation Outreach

Sacramento, Calif. – Assembly Bill 178 was approved in 2022, and appropriated $20 million to fund a competitive grant program for all county probation departments to establish Mobile Probation Service Centers. On April 13, 2023, the Board of State and Community Corrections awarded the Sacramento County Probation Department $1,319,860 to support implementation of these services within the community.

With available grant funds, Sacramento County Probation has acquired 5 vehicles for this purpose. The vehicles include three cargo vans and two four-wheeled drive trucks equipped with technology, equipment, and workstations to support unhoused clients by providing probation services in or near the locations where unhoused clients reside.

The Mobile Service Centers offer a creative solution to clients who face housing and transportation barriers that hinder compliance with probation requirements. Probation officers are now deploying these mobile outreach vehicles into the community to conduct check-ins, connect clients to services, and distribute essentials such as clothing, hygiene kits, food, and water. These centers also provide a safe environment for unhoused clients to engage with community-based service providers and other county partners, such as the Department of Health Services.

By bringing these services directly to unhoused clients throughout the county, this initiative aims to increase engagement, provide stability, support recovery, and help clients achieve their goals while enhancing public safety.

What the Service Centers offer

  • Officers conduct client check-ins
  • Provided case status updates
  • Shared vital resources with those in need

These mobile outreach efforts help foster meaningful connections between Probation Officers and the community—bringing support and services directly to where they're needed most.

We remain committed to increasing accessibility and providing compassionate, on-the-ground support for those we serve.
